2.1 - There are some tricks that one might apply though, right? You could create several extruders designed for different materials, which might somehow get around the problem. You can create plastic parts which you then cast into metallic ones, employing other low-tech methods to enhance what the system CAN do. You're right though: there are big issues to overcome. 2.2 - You will ultimately hit a wall in terms of the number of printers. I believe someone did a calculation based on the number of arduinos and stepper motors in production once.....

2.3 - Computers followed a similar trend. Perhaps it is the ability to do it in your own garage which helps push companies to provide competitive products? Certainly this has worked out well for the PC market.
