The main reason for keeping registration open is to lower the barrier of entry for people that want to fix issues or contribute to the wiki. The more steps a user has to take, the less likely they are to go through them. Using AbuseFilter and Google's ReCaptcha, I can limit the number of SPAM posts to almost nothing without hindering legitimate users.
