Can Counterfeit exist in opensource communities?
in short yes it can and regardless of the license, while everything in the opensource world is "open" to one degree or
another the activity can exist,in our case this is mostly a problem with hotends and various electronics boards , the reality of what they are producing and how they advertise is the main problem which makes them technically counterfeitters, what they are actually producing is a "variant" which in a lot of cases is a very different product from what they are advertising it as , this is most prominant in the case of hotend and more so recently (NOV 2014) with hotends looking similar to the e3d which are advertised as "Jhead" in the majority of cases the claim in the advertising is written in a way to trick users who don't know any better into thinking that they are getting somthing that is built according the original sources when infact they do not.
some of these differences are quite prominant and obvious and some of the more dishonerable sellers actually use photos of a genuine product of what they are claiming to be selling , some in the past for example on ebay have actually gone as far to claim that they were the original developers of the claimed product!
How counterfeitting hurts developers and development:
in most cases when somthing is counterfeitted there is a decline in sales seen by the genuine sellers, usually this is because the counterfeitters sell at a lower price due to their lower overheads as they don't generally provide customer service nor do they do much in the way of development to improve what they are producing nor any warranty on what they sell ,most of the time customer service falls onto the community itself and the developers as users in the opensource community don't often return to the place of sale for customer service.
most hardware developers put a majority of the money earnt through sales back into the project to varying degrees, however once they see a reduction in sales some will stop development or cut back on the development they do, either way the community and the developer suffers in multiple ways as the result is the counterfeitters making all the money which doesn't go back into development
Dealing with Counterfeitting in an opensource community:
while this issue isn't really new, there have been many publicised attempts at stopping it.
the wiki - currently used extensively and abused heavily in some cases with some sellers putting multiple links across multiple pages in every spot they think they will get away with others have manipulated ebay searchlinks
the forum - mostly confimed to the for sale section, however there are a couple of sellers in there which are not limiting themselves to one post at a time
ebay & aliexpress - we ultimatly cannot do anything about the reporting system is a bit of a dismal failure in it's effectiveness and ebay management do not generally care to recognise any of them as counterfeitters however while we cannot get ebay to act we can remove links in the wiki to them

This is a version of marlin that i have modified, specifically hardware pwm capability, this version requires you have a board with a hardware pwm capable pin hooked up to the mosfets driving your heaters, all these modifications were submitted to the main marlin github repo via a pull request but after nearly 6 months didn't end up used as there is no interest in hardware pwm capability even though it is the solution to a lot of current handling problems particularly when running 12v heaters on 24v supplies or with power bricks which can't handle the 4hz software pwm currently implemented in the current version of marlin
this is a thoroughly tested version and while lacking in certain up to date features like the thermal runaway protection, this version is much more tested and proven
