RepRap Orca is the latest 3D printer in development by mendel-parts.com and well in short: it will blow all others away I've seen so far..

Soon we will start revealing specs/features/future development and yes we will opensource all files in time.

On a sidepath we will (most-likely) start developing new electronics over coming months also, in short: a sort of very extensive GEN6 with alot of addons/features and standalone printing from SD and a Touchscreen LCD (probably 4,3") to control the printer and alot more at a very competitive price.. We will start revealing features of the electronics also over the coming months, but probably on a seperate page as soon as we have a name for it. (its called internally here "gen6 ultra" atm but will change, hmm.. i just realise something, why not "Orca Electronics" ;)

Nomenclature

*it is a wiki, after all, so keep your fingers crossed.

Version 0.1

  • Some weekend in January, 2011 : The first basic concept has been drawn
  • Some weekend in April, 2011: After on hold for some months, I've finished first files, printing the parts, building it.. and being amazed about it even without any thick sheet (yet) is very solid... and it will be probably one printbed to print (excl extruder). So suddenly I start to realise that this printer is better then anything around atm (for the given selling price, since it will be cheap) and still has very high stifness and the shortest belts I've seen around (probably 700/840/840mm) long belts=very expensive, more issues etc..

(ill slowly reveal more info over coming weeks/months depending on how it all goes with the first proto.)

PS: It will not contain wood and no M3 nuts/bolts (maybe only for motors/electronics, but we will go to m4 for those too) So in future only M4 and M8 threading and aluminium thick sheet and maybe one POM sheet..

FAQ

Q: Why is this new printer called "Orca"

A: someone in IRC kept misreading my Orsa (project codename) or well maybe on purpose not sure.. (Orsa = bear in Italian, since it looks a bit like a ....)
