Building an all-ABS extruder mount compatible with the E3D hotend.

Part 1: Extruder mount (works with Greg's accessible extruder)

This is a description of an extruder mount I designed and constructed that is compatible with the E3D hotend. Since the E3D uses fan cooling, it is often imperative to prevent this cooling air from blowing down onto the heated bed during the print, as this can cool the bed surface and thereby lead to warping of the part, particularly during the first few layers of printing. To solve this problem, the extruder mount was designed to fit snugly with the exit of the fan shroud, directing the air into a chamber with holes that direct the air sideways or upwards away from the bed. This mount is designed to fit onto the X-carriage of a Prusa-i3 type printer, and fits Greg's accessible extruder.

Part2: E3D mounting Plate

In order to hold the E3D hotend in position, a mounting plate is required. This one is designed out of ABS. It has two mounting holes for 8-32 screws. The part is shown below. This E3D mounting plate, designed for the Tubularbot3D printer. Is also compatible with other Prusa i3 printers. This design allows the top of the E3D hotend to mate directly to the bottom of Greg's accessible extruder.

Part 3: X-Carriage

As mentioned earlier, this X-carriage is similar to previous Prusa-i3 designs except that two additional screw binding points have been added for extra stability. It takes three LM8UU bearings that are usually fastened with 4" plastic ties.

Part 4: Putting it together

The images below show the 3 plastic parts described above put together with the E3D hotend (the actual tip of the E3D is not yet mounted). The first image shows the positioning of the extruder mount and the E3D plate. The second image shows the correct alignment of the E3D fan shroud and heat sink with the underside of the extruder mount. The final image shows the X-carriage positioned on the back of the extruder mount.

The completed unit is shown below mounted into a Tubularbot Prusa-i3 style printer. The unit also includes a custom designed fan intake shroud described elsewhere. For additional info and other parts designed by me, please visit: http://www.thingiverse.com/dmarett/designs
