Background

Mixtape Mendel is designed from the ground up to be as parametric as possible. It is inspired by the work of many people. Current development is being done in the github repository. The current focus is on a complete version 0.2 release. To do so we are working on ironing out the configuration files for a Mendel and Huxley class printer, as well as completing the tool head designs. We want to make it as easy to specify what you are going to use in the configuration file.

Design Goals

  • Use 1.75mm filament
  • Support double extruders/multi tools.
  • Support a Sharpie mount for easy PCB etching.
  • Have a better printable volume to printer volume ratio.
  • Simple and complete configuration file.

Pictures

Version 0.2x

The version 0.2x model is designed to push the limits of what can be done with parametric modeling. It is made in the Mendel and Prusa Mendel's image.

Version 0.3x

Version 0.3x is currently in the conceptual phase. After a stable Version 0.2x release is made and a parametric assembly model is done, we will begin work on 0.3x. It will be both very similar and interchangeable with the 0.2x design, except it will again further the goal of fewer vitamin parts and a significantly simplified design. It will use a hybrid Cartesian and delta system. The X and Z stage is very much inspired by the Rockwell Automation pick and place system. The hybridization will provide a nice segue into the delta bot territory we all seek without the difficulty of fore bar linkages and ball joints.

Development Road Map

Version 0.1 (Unreleased)

  • Was a rough mockup for ideas and geometry (Well documented in the blog).

Version 0.2 Prototype (Complete, Printing)

  • All designs completed
  • Issues are known. Will be fixed in the Release

Version 0.20 (Target: Late April Release)(ok, missed this one. very close though)

  • Cartesian platform (complete)
  • Extruder/ Bowden couplings
  • Document/cleanup
  • Huxley Class config
  • X end bushing mounts turned 90 degrees
  • Tapping turned on/off
  • Better x belt routing (Possibly Version 0.2)
  • NO MORE MULTIPLIERS

Version 0.3x

  • Will feature a new gantry that combines X and Z very efficiently
